BG99 Flagstone Blue: Copic Markers Uncapped (Marker Swatch, Ink Testing)

BG99 Flagstone Blue

Let’s take a closer look at this Copic Marker and its ink characteristics.

BG99 Flagstone Blue Copic Marker. We swatch and test Copic colors- layering, staining, lift, value, lightfastness, saturation, and cap accuracy. | MarkerNovice.com | How to blend alcohol ink markers.

BG99 Flagstone Blue is a medium green-blue Copic Marker which mimics Perylene Green watercolor. This is an essential color for landscape sketches, ideal for distant trees, shrubs, and mountains. BG99 is only available in Copic Sketch and Classic marker styles.

Every Copic Marker has different characteristics based upon its unique ink formula.

Knowing how a color behaves will help you blend effectively and make art with confidence.

BG99 Flagstone Blue

Let’s take a closer look at this Copic Marker and its ink characteristics.

Temperature: A medium blue-green

Resemblance: Perylene Green watercolor

Actual Value: N7 (notice this color is lighter than the promised “9” value on the cap and significantly lighter than the cap color)

All Copics are measured on a Neutral Gray value scale. The last number on the cap is supposed to indicate value but we’ve found discrepancies where the actual ink value is different than cap designation.

Cap Accuracy: NO! The plastic on a Sketch marker is incredibly deceiving. The color is much darker than 1-2 coats of BG99. It’s actually closer to 5 layers of BG99.

BG99 Flagstone Blue Copic Marker. We swatch and test Copic colors- layering, staining, lift, value, lightfastness, saturation, and cap accuracy. | MarkerNovice.com | How to blend alcohol ink markers.

Buildup: BG99 looks oily from the first layer which means you’ll need to build up 4 or more layers before the ink does not look streaky or splotchy.

Shattering: BG99 easily shatters into blue and green with strong amber-brown leakage around the margins

Chromatography testing shows this ink’s behavior when it comes in contact with #0 Colorless Blender (solvent). High shattering colors may leak unexpected color when you make corrections or attempt to blend with any color that has a high solvent to colorant ratio. Shattering is not bad, it’s just something to be aware of.

Staining: BG99 is a mildly staining color.

Lift: BG99 lifts slightly but the paper will remain light blue and you may see amber edges to the correction zone.

See staining swatch. Sample was given 6 stripes of #0 Colorless Blender, drying between each stripe. Results indicate how much lifting you can expect.

Lightfast: BG99 did not fade during the test period.

Samples were swatched on X-Press It Blending Card. 1 layer of ink was exposed to windowsill sunlight for 21 days. Approximately 10 hours of sun per day based on weather conditions. Note: we do not recommend displaying original Copic art under these conditions.

Natural Ink Family: BG99 is the darker of the BG-Ninety family

Family Members: BG90, BG93, BG96, BG99

We include this information because many Copic users never think deeper than the letter groupings (R, BV, G, etc.). Every ink has its own temperature variations and underlying flavors. Understanding what an ink looks like in its different dilutions helps when creating your own blending combinations.

Complement: A strong magenta like RV17

Underpaint: We suggest underpainting with pale gray like RV34

This is simply one suggestion. Many possible colors exist. Test to find a color that pleases you.

Pushing Pencil: Prismacolor 1076 90% Warm Grey is perfect for pushing BG11 if used with an extremely light touch.

BG32 Aqua Mint

Let’s take a closer look at this Copic Marker and its ink characteristics.

Temperature: A light greenish blue

Resemblance: Cobalt Turquoise watercolor

Actual Value: N3

All Copics are measured on a Neutral Gray value scale. The last number on the cap is supposed to indicate value but we’ve found discrepancies where the actual ink value is different than cap designation.

Buildup: BG32 layers beautifully and reaches maximum value at 4 coats. We did not detect any blotchiness as we layered this color, unusual for a Copic ink!

Shattering: Shatters into viridian with hints of blue leakage.

Staining: BG32 is a moderate staining color.

Lift: BG32 can be lightened slightly but the paper remains light blue and the edges of the lifted area look noticeably dark.

See staining swatch. Sample was given 6 stripes of #0 Colorless Blender, drying between each stripe. Results indicate how much lifting you can expect.

Lightfast: Our swatch did not noticeably fade during the test period.

Samples were swatched on X-Press It Blending Card. 1 layer of ink was exposed to windowsill sunlight for 21 days. Approximately 10 hours of sun per day based on weather conditions. Note: we do not recommend displaying original Copic art under these conditions.

BG13 Mint Green: Copics Uncapped (Marker Swatch, Ink Testing)

BG13 Mint Green

Let’s take a closer look at this Copic Marker and its ink characteristics.

Learn more about BG13 Mint Green Copic Marker. We swatch and test Copic colors- layering, staining, lift, value, lightfastness, saturation, and cap accuracy. | MarkerNovice.com | How to color with alcohol markers.

BG13 Mint Green is a warm medium teal Copic Marker which mimics Cobalt Turquoise watercolor. A cheerful color, ideal for spring and party images. BG13 is available in Copic Sketch, Ciao, and Classic marker styles.

Every Copic Marker has unique characteristics based on its unique ink formula.

Knowing how a color behaves will help you blend effectively and make art with confidence.

BG13 Mint Green

Let’s take a closer look at this Copic Marker and its ink characteristics.

Temperature: A warm, medium teal.

Resemblance: Cobalt Turquoise watercolor.

Actual Value: N4 (please read the Natural Ink Family info below for a blending warning)

All Copics are measured on a Neutral Gray value scale. The last number on the cap is supposed to indicate value but we’ve found discrepancies where the actual ink value is different than cap designation.

Cap Accuracy: The plastic on a Sketch marker accurately resembles 1-2 coats of BG13 ink.

Buildup: BG13 layers well and reaches maximum value at 3 coats.

Shattering: Shatters into viridian with hints of warm greenish gold leakage. We also noted that at 4 layers of ink, we saw this golden color around the outer edges of the sample.

Staining: BG13 is a staining color.

Learn more about BG13 Mint Green Copic Marker. We swatch and test Copic colors- layering, staining, lift, value, lightfastness, saturation, and cap accuracy. | MarkerNovice.com | How to blend and color with alcohol markers.

Lift: BG13 can be lightened slightly but the paper remains a light blue color and the edges of the lifted area look noticeably green.

See staining swatch. Sample was given 6 stripes of #0 Colorless Blender, drying between each stripe. Results indicate how much lifting you can expect.

Lightfast: Our swatch did not fade at all during the test period.

Samples were swatched on X-Press It Blending Card. 1 layer of ink was exposed to windowsill sunlight for 21 days. Approximately 10 hours of sun per day based on weather conditions. Note: we do not recommend displaying original Copic art under these conditions.

Natural Ink Family: BG13 is in the middle of of the BG-Teen family. To be honest, this group feels like semi-related markers which have been mashed together into a single family. BG10 and 11 are close but related while BG13 and BG15 glow. Then BG18 has a bit of murkiness to it.

WARNING: In keeping with our theory that the BG-Teens are only semi-related, please notice that both BG13 and BG15 measure a value of 4. If BG13 was truly a dilution of BG15, they would not measure as the same value. This causes a lot of confusion when users try to color blending combinations such as BG11-BG13-BG15 or BG13-BG15-BG18, only to find that they do not create the expected light-medium-dark effect. It’s not your eyes, these markers are misnumbered and not related!

Family Members: BG18, BG15, BG13, BG11, BG10

We include this information because many Copic users never think deeper than the letter groupings (R, BV, G, etc.). Every ink has its own temperature variations and underlying flavors. Understanding what an ink looks like in its different dilutions helps when creating your own blending combinations.

Complement: A pale pink like RV00

Underpaint: We suggest underpainting with soft gray like N3

This is simply one suggestion. Many possible colors exist. Test to find a color that pleases you.

Pushing Pencil: Prismacolor 936 Slate Grey is perfect for pushing BG11 if used with an extremely light touch.

Buildup: BG02 reaches full strength at 4 layers and does not develop any mottled oily appearance.

Shattering: BG02 does not appear to shatter.

BG49 Duck Blue is very bluish green Copic Marker which mimics Phthalo Turquoise watercolor. This marker makes a beautiful and sophisticated addition to any color palette in lieu of blue or green. BG18 is available in Copic Sketch, Ciao, and Classic marker styles.

Every Copic Marker has unique characteristics based on its unique ink formula.

Knowing how a color behaves will help you blend effectively and make art with confidence.

BG49 Duck Blue

Let’s take a closer look at this Copic Marker and its ink characteristics.

Temperature: A cooler turquoise (more blue than green)

Resemblance: Phthalo Turquoise watercolor.

Actual Value: N7 (note this is lighter than the 9 in “BG49” indicates)

All Copics are measured on a Neutral Gray value scale. The last number on the cap is supposed to indicate value but we’ve found discrepancies where the actual ink value is different than cap designation.

Cap Accuracy: The plastic on a Sketch marker matches 1 coat of BG49.

Buildup: BG49 develops a slightly oily look on the third coat.

Shattering: Shatters into viridian and cyan with hints of yellow on the outer edge.

Staining: BG49 is highly staining.

Lift: BG49 is stubborn and permanent. You can lighten it slightly but it can only be camouflaged, not lifted.

See staining swatch. Sample was given 6 stripes of #0 Colorless Blender, drying between each stripe. Results indicate how much lifting you can expect.

Lightfast: The fade was slight on this marker, about 10%.

Samples were swatched on X-Press It Blending Card. 1 layer of ink was exposed to windowsill sunlight for 21 days. Approximately 10 hours of sun per day based on weather conditions. Note: we do not recommend displaying original Copic art under these conditions.

Natural Ink Family: BG49 is the dark end of a very small family. This is disappointing because we’d use this family more if we had more natural combinations for it.

Family Members: BG45, BG49

We include this information because many Copic users never think deeper than the letter groupings (R, BV, G, etc.). Every ink has its own temperature variations and underlying flavors. Understanding what an ink looks like in its different dilutions helps when creating your own blending combinations.

Complement: A medium standard pink like RV13

Underpaint: We suggest underpainting with medium gray like N5

This is simply one suggestion. Many possible colors exist. Test to find a color that pleases you.

Pushing Pencil: Prismacolor 901 Indigo Blue is perfect for pushing BG49.

BG18 Teal Blue is a diluted teal Copic Marker which resembles Cobalt Turquoise watercolor. This is a mature, desaturated color, ideal for natural and realistic coloring. BG18 is only available in Copic Sketch and Classic marker styles.

Every Copic Marker has unique characteristics based on its unique ink formula.

Knowing how a color behaves will help you blend effectively and make art with confidence.

BG18 Teal Blue

Let’s take a closer look at this Copic Marker and its ink characteristics.

Temperature: A warm teal.

Resemblance: Moderately diluted Cobalt Turquoise watercolor.

Actual Value: N5 (note this is much lighter than the 8 in “BG18” indicates)

All Copics are measured on a Neutral Gray value scale. The last number on the cap is supposed to indicate value but we’ve found discrepancies where the actual ink value is different than cap designation.

Cap Accuracy: NO! The plastic on a Sketch marker is incredibly misleading. Not only is the plastic too dark but it’s also too blue. This really bothers me because I love this ink but I don’t use it much because I forget how wrong the cap is.

Buildup: BG18 layers beautifully.

Shattering: Shatters into viridian and cyan with faint hints of yellow on the outer edge.

Staining: BG18 stains slightly.

Lift: A moderate lifting color. It’s not erasable but you can soften some mistakes.

See staining swatch. Sample was given 6 stripes of #0 Colorless Blender, drying between each stripe. Results indicate how much lifting you can expect.

Lightfast: The fade was slight on this marker, less than 10%.

Samples were swatched on X-Press It Blending Card. 1 layer of ink was exposed to windowsill sunlight for 21 days. Approximately 10 hours of sun per day based on weather conditions. Note: we do not recommend displaying original Copic art under these conditions.

Natural Ink Family: BG18 should be a darker version of the other markers in this family. This doesn’t seem to be true. BG13 and BG15 are glowing colors, so BG18 should be glowing and dark, yet it’s a mild color with a bit of murkiness to it.

Complement: A medium standard pink like RV13.

Underpaint: We suggest underpainting with medium gray like N5

This is simply one suggestion. Many possible colors exist. Test to find a color that pleases you.

Pushing Pencil: Prismacolor Indigo Blue 901 is perfect for pushing BG18.

VanillaArts.com (our sister site) teaches a Push & Pull technique for dimensional coloring. This is simply one suggestion. Many possible colors exist. Test to find a color that pleases you.
